Ah, Halloween…where we can be anyone we want for a day, and when the internet goes crazy at all the culturally offensive costumes people choose to wear.

“Cultural appropriation” is a term you’ll hear this Halloween season, but what does it actually mean? Essentially, it means wearing something for fun or profit that confirms a stereotype. Costumes that depict a group of people who have been historically attacked, oppressed or discriminated against are especially offensive.

These costumes are what you should NOT wear.

But there are plenty of ways to show cultural pride on Halloween without making anyone feel put down.

Costumes of famous people are definitely fair game. Cardi B is one of our modern cultural icons, and she has so many vibrant looks to choose from! The outfit above can be easily replicated with clothes you have laying around the house!

Food-inspired costumes are another fun way to get creative.
